“I want to inquire into worlds that elude perception—or resist being seen. From that curiosity arose ALT.”
For roughly four years, Tsurumaki Ikuko has conducted interviews with people living with visual impairments. Through these encounters, she has come to understand that “visual impairment” resists neat categorization, and instead attends closely to the distinct circumstances of each person. Her work addresses the slippage through which communication continually gives rise to misunderstanding, and shows that there are always parts of another that lie beyond one’s understanding. It carefully reexamines ways of seeing.
