Soundscapes: The Films and Music of KOSUGI Takehisa and the Taj Mahal Travellers

FUJII Seiichi, Body Wave,1971

In 1970, the Taj Mahal Travellers staged a “picnic concert” on the beach at Oiso, performing from first light through to sunset. Their legendary, hours-long performance, set against projected images and recorded sound of the waves, was filmed by several artists working with the moving image. From this constellation of works, the program brings together three films, which has long been absent from Japanese screens: Body Wave by Fujii Seiichi; TM, a three-minute film by Kosugi Takehisa; and Dialogue with a White Shadow (1964), an experimental film by Kitamura Michio with music by Kosugi. The program invites us to see—and to listen to—rare footage of performances by Kosugi and the Taj Mahal Travellers, in pursuit of “sound” itself beyond the conventional bounds of music, shown alongside the films by Fujii and Kitamura.

Presented in collaboration with HEAR.
