KOSUGI Takehisa

Takehisa Kosugi was born in Tokyo in 1938. While studying at Tokyo University of the Arts, he co-founded Group Ongaku, Japan’s first collective improvisation group, with ToneTone Yasunao, Shiomi Mieko, and others in 1960. His event pieces were introduced internationally through Fluxus in the early 1960s. From 1965 to 1967, he lived in New York, collaborating with Nam June Paik and other artists. In 1969, he formed Taj Mahal Travellers and participated in numerous art, music, and rock festivals in Japan and abroad. After moving to the United States in 1977, he joined the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, serving as Music Director from 1995 to 2011. He remained active internationally in concerts and exhibitions until his death in 2018.
