The Moving Image Today and Tomorrow: Toward the Third Commission Project

First launched in 2023, the Commission Project invites Japan-based artists to create new moving-image works, which are then premiered at the Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions. Building on the networks the Festival has developed in Japan and internationally, the initiative has continually helped sustain artists’ creative practices by circulating these works widely in Japan and beyond.
This symposium brings together members of the jury to consider both the potential of the moving image in Japan and what such practice can be today, drawing on what they have come to recognize through the Commission Project to date. The session will also announce the four finalists—the commissioned artists—for the third Commission Project.
