Syncope follows Asian women who have long sought new possibilities in sound, tracing their journeys as they cross borders without relying on any single mother tongue. The work unfolds with something of the texture of a travel diary. Taking a long-distance train as a central metaphor, it evokes environments in which the tempos of ecological migration and the rapid formation of social structures accelerate across past, present, and future. Echoing its title, the work turns to syncopation, a musical technique that alters rhythm by swapping strong and weak beats, to reflect on ways of living that slip free of prescribed rules while still sustaining coexistence. Jun superimposes formless digital plants with the landscapes of each city—Epiphyllum blooms, as it were—reconfiguring relationships that reach across time and space and between the real and the virtual.
