Duri-Empire is a documentary co-created by FAMEME—who grew up in an overseas Chinese family—and director Yu Cheng-Ta. Attending to feng shui rituals and the culturally specific value systems that have long shaped Chinese communities across Asia, the film also turns inward, tracing the inner life of FAMEME, known as the heir to a family durian business. After years spent traveling through many different countries, his return home becomes a point of departure: the film follows him as he negotiates shifting relationships with his family and an ongoing search for identity, works through the losses brought by the pandemic, and gathers himself to take up the durian trade once again.
