Goldfish cannot live in the sea; neither can humans. Yet together, perhaps they could cross it. Over generations, goldfish have been selectively bred—to be easy to keep in small aquaria and to appear more beautiful. Seeing in that crafted body an echo of the position of women in society, the artist places a goldfish in a small bag and sets out to cross the sea with it—an attempt to travel far, together.
As the artist writes, “Goldfish cannot survive in the sea. Nor can I. But I believed that together, we could cross the ocean.”
