Once, the sea was called a soundless world. Beneath its surface, words of prayer are released; yet humans cannot endure underwater without an unbroken intake of oxygen. Though unheard, the prayer persists—mingling with exhaled breath, it rises as bubbles, briefly visible, then dissolves into the sea. The work gives form to a conviction: that art is an attempt to see the invisible and hear the inaudible—prayer itself. In the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake, the artist turned to making art; for the artist, the act of praying in the sea became necessary.
