Ten years after the completion of Living on the River Agano (Aga ni ikiru), the filmmakers return to the people and the landscape once captured through the lens, quietly layering the traces etched into that place with their memories of making the film. On ground that was once rice paddies, a screen is set up; as Living on the River Agano is projected there, the voices and recollections of the people who appeared in it rise again, in close counterpoint to the images. Attuned to the intertwined memories of people and place, the film traces the flow of time linking past, present, and future with a touch that is both delicate and strong. As the point of departure for Spring, On the Shores of Aga, the Commission Project Special Prize–winning work by Komori Haruka, which takes up the challenge of carrying forward the memory of the Agano in the years since, this film is given a special screening.
