With structure and editing as its organizing principle, this program explores OKI Hiroyuki’s world through two signature works that traverse the boundaries between the moving image and live performance, and between reality and fiction. Um/ Om 1, the eighth work in the DIGI series, takes Kagawa as its point of departure, drawing on footage shot in Nagano, China, Tibet, and elsewhere. Layered into as many as six superimposed strata and shaped by a rigorous editing framework, the work cuts open a knotty, fiercely experimental terrain―one that wrestles with the intellectual, religious, and artistic currents of the twenty-fi rst century. In meta dramatic, presented at the Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions 2023, the work holds a “meta” vantage point―looking in from outside and above the frame of what we call “drama”―in taut tension with dramatic events as they unfold, while live footage on a large screen and a quiet physical performance in an adjacent space run in parallel. Also premiering will be the Ebisu edition of Matsumae-kun’s Red (Public Pants) Film (Ebisu Version), part of a series that has continued since 1989.
