In the reciprocal relations between people and society, Angelica Mesiti attends closely to the subtleties of human presence through nonverbal communication—sound and the body. In The Rites of When, she reconsiders ritual and collective actions tied to seasonal cycles. Amid the unsettled norms and conditions that bind society today, the project refuses easy assent to fixed-cycle views in which cultures and people move from one state to another. Instead, it presents mixtures of cultures in a zone where past and present intersect and, by imagining new forms of ritual, seeks to rebuild connections among people.
