SAWA Hiraki

Working between London and Kanazawa, Sawa Hiraki (1977–) centers his practice on the moving image, interweaving sculptural and pictorial elements to create pieces that bear little resemblance to everyday reality yet quicken the viewer’s imagination. He explores the threshold where image and exhibition space intersect, conjuring scenes that could not occur in the world and yet feel uncannily familiar, pressing against what we take to be real. His practice has been the subject of solo exhibitions internationally; his pieces are held in public collections; and he has participated in numerous international exhibitions to wide acclaim. Selected exhibitions include the Taipei Biennial 2025 (Taipei Fine Arts Museum); “Journey and Imagination—Connecting to the Stories of Others” (Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum, 2022); “Roppongi Crossing 2016” (Mori Art Museum, 2016); and the 12th Biennale de Lyon (2013).
