PANTOGRAPH

PANTOGRAPH, Walking in Strobe Light Rain, 2015
Created for Exhibition “Motion Science” at 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, 2015

Pantograph have so far created numerous animated and three-dimensional works. Walking in Strobe Light Rain is an animation that is brought to life when images on a rotating umbrella, suspended from the ceiling, are set in motion by a stroboscopic light that flashes in the darkness. In Clockwork Birdcage, an originally developed application is used to transform a fast rotating birdcage into a lively object, and thereby create a three-dimensional animation. A movie consists of individual frames that are projected onto a screen one by one, using a film projector as a light source. While the projection appears to be moving, it is in fact a sequence of images that are projected by repeatedly opening and closing the shutter between the frames, to create the sensation of movement only in the viewer’s mind. Reproducing the same effect based on the same principle, using strobe light and an application, the works featured here remind the viewer of what exactly all those movies are that we casually watch on a daily basis.
