Teaching a Plant the Alphabet, 1972. Courtesy Electronic Arts Intermix (EAI), New York.

Teaching a Plant the Alphabet (1972) is a performance video with a simple structure: a man continuing to teach a houseplant the alphabet by showing it cards on which letters of the alphabet are written. When something that has “meaning” in human perception turns into “meaninglessness,” this completely senseless act draws humor from the irony of human-centered communication and questions its true nature.
