The Childlike Life of the Black Tarantula by the Black Tarantula, 1978

Acker’s self-published first novel The Childlike Life of the Black Tarantula (1973–76), written under the pseudonym “The Black Tarantula,” consisted of six booklets mailed to her close friends and associates and was the precursor to Acker’s first book of the same title. The near-plotless narrative is composed of cut-up sequences of her personal arguments and fantasies, as well as texts appropriated from the works of Charles Dickens, Marcel Proust, and Marquis de Sade, with characters frequently changing personalities and genders while moving effortlessly through time and space. From her own conceptual interest as a performance artist, Acker conceives of reading as a recursive and embodied process.
