15:50 (2023), a work comprising a clock that keeps pointing to 3:50 / 15:50, is one of a series of works that was presented at the solo exhibition shibboleth / schibboleth held in 2020. The word “schibboleth” is said to be a code word that the Gileadites used to identify and kill Ephraimites who could not pronounce the “sh” (schi) sound correctly during a war between the Ephraim and the Gilead. This work, 15:50, is also derived from the phrase ju-go-en, go-ju-sen (15 yen, 50 sen), which is said to have been used to identify Japanese and Koreans by their pronunciation after the Great Kanto Earthquake, when massacres by the Japanese military, police, and vigilantes occurred in many places due to the spread of a rumor that Koreans were causing riots. For the Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions, this series of works will be reconstructed and presented as a lecture-performance consisting of multiple sections.
