Animal Enrichment, 2019 / HD video (original 16mm film)

The images reflected by Piotrowska’s three series of photographs and moving images, each of which targets seemingly familiar landscapes, scenes, and objects from daily life, create tension and new meaning through gestures, actions, and other perspectives. Animal Enrichment, which captures people playing with toys and objects used to engage and train animals in captivity, cynically and elegantly reflects the irony of humans enjoying and playing with toys intended for animals. Enclosures documents the emptiness of artificial zoos designed to dominate animals, while Shelters shows people using furniture and furnishings to create shelters within their own domestic spaces. By focusing on humans and animals and the psychological realm within the home, the artist attempts to highlight power structures and relations of domination that are concealed within the social system.
