Caducean City, 2006 / 4K projection (original 16mm film)

Caducean City (2006) was commissioned by the Museo d’Arte Moderna di Bologna for an exhibition series titled “What is the Role of the Art Institution?” Chung and Maeda responded with a cinematic work, capturing the distinctive medieval cityscape of Bologna through the perspective of an ambulance window. The execution of the project relied upon the understanding and cooperation of the museum and the public institutions, including the city hall, fire department, and police, to allow the ambulance for its high-speed travel with active sirens yet absent a patient. Following protracted negotiations, an exception from the city’s laws and regulations was granted. “Caducean” is the two serpents entwined around a staff used as a symbol of medicine and negotiation. The exhibition features a 4K digitally remastered version of the original 16 mm negative. (Jay Chung and Q Takeki Maeda)
