Dara BIRNBAUM, Technology/Transformation: Wonder Woman, 1978-79. Courtesy of Dara Birnbaum and Electronic Arts Intermix (EAI), New York.

Researching and repurposing footage from the 1970s TV series Wonder Woman, which featured the American comic book heroine, Birnbaum extracts the moment when an ordinary woman transforms into Wonder Woman and places it in repetition. Through the recurring imagery and fragmented special effects, such as the repeated fire-spewing explosion scene at the film’s beginning and the dizzying turns Wonder Woman makes to perform her transformation, Birnbaum suspends the stereotypical image of Wonder Woman to critique and transform preconceptions created by the TV story. The lyrics of the theme song “Wonder Woman Disco,” which plays at the end of the film, are projected on screen to emphasize the contents of the song, revealing the sexual desires of the heroine who is Wonder Woman.
