RP stands for “recommended practices.” The (U.S.) Society of Motion Picture
and Television Engineers (SMPTE) develops standards for TV broadcast
and film projection technology. As SMPTE’s film projection test patterns
(recommended color tones and gray scales etc.) are projected, sound test
tones are played randomly. “Ideal images” which were previously experienced
and shared through the diverse formats of film are reconsidered here from a
contemporary point of view.

RP47, 2012 / Randomized digital projection transferred from scans of 8mm, 16mm,
35mm, 70mm film, and digital cinema files, including captured formats in standard
spherical 35mm, anamorphic 35mm, Super-35mm, and VistaVision, and stereoscopic
processes in Marks 3Depix, Space-Vision, and StereoVision, and from the Fastax
rotating prism system, with audio samples from optical and magnetic soundtrack test
material, indefinite duration.
