It is no coincidence that many films from the dawn of filmmaking at the end
of the 19th century focus on people’s movements. Eadweard MUYBRIDGE’s
series of photos of modern dance pioneer Isadora DUNCAN aimed to
document and reproduce human movement. The installation Lessons
and Conveyance
(2016) thrillingly confronts the recreation of images, as
if traveling back in time from digital moving images to the medium of
photography. Created from the two media of video and photography in the
context of a dance lesson attended by three women, this work depicts the
diverse relationships among images, which cannot be reduced to simply
seeing/being seen.
