Expanded Cinema Performance: Beyond the Frame

MIYAI Rikuro, Shadow, Performance view at the Art Institute of Chicago, 2017

“Expanded cinema,” which gained momentum chiefly during the 1960s and 1970s, has produced an array of new visual experiences by pushing existing boundaries and questioning the essential meaning and possibilities of film. The masterpieces of expanded cinema are being revived in collaboration with Hirasawa Go and Julian Ross, avid organizers of Japanese expanded cinema screening events in recent years. The addition of musician Oshiro Makoto’s contemporary explorations of sound makes for the ultimate experimental live performance.
