Étienne-Jules MAREY

Physician and physiologist Étienne-Jules MAREY (1830-1904) was born in
Beaune, France. In 1882, he invented a rifle shaped
camera that could take photos in
rapid sequence. He photographed subjects’
movement with this photographic gun, and
succeeded in showing paths of movement
using multiple exposures on a single plate.
This technology, called chronophotography,
was a historic invention that captured and
showed the movement of various things.
