YAMAZAWA Eiko

YAMAZAWA Eiko, Objects, from the series What I'm doing-positions and Directions, 1986
Collection of Tokyo Photographic Art Museum

Yamazawa Eiko studied photography in the US, and upon returning to Japan, mainly worked in the realms of portrait and industrial photography. In the 1950s, she began to dedicate herself more seriously to her artistic practice, and launched a series of abstract depictions of various objects and pieces of junk, which she called “Abstract Photographs.” The series “What I Am Doing” was unveiled at the artist’s final exhibition of new creations in 1986. Yamazawa eventually arrived at her own unique artistic language through repeated experimentation with composing photographs, by arranging subjects and colors from her own previous works and photographic equipment.
