Laure ALBIN-GUILLOT

Laure ALBIN-GUILLOT, Racine d'orge (coupe). from the series MICROGRAPHIE DÉCORATIVE, 1931
Collection of Tokyo Photographic Art Museum

In these works that were originally part of a large-format portfolio published in 1931, the artist paid tribute to her late husband, a researcher who used to specialize in microscopic specimen. As the title “Micrographie Décorative” suggests, microscopic photographs of cells and specimen from such things as a rhino’s horn, a horse’s hoof, plants and bacteria, are presented with a focus on their formal beauty and decorative quality as photographs. The marriage between visual art and science has given way to a new art form: images that are invisible to the naked eye, visualized through the technology of a microscope.
