KANAI Kumiko (guest speaker)

Painter. Born 1945 in Beijing. Held solo exhibitions at Lunami Gallery (1967), Sirota Gallery (1975, 1977), Art Space Bireiki (1987, 2003), Aoyama Book Center (2002), Murakoshi Gallery (2007, 2011, 2013 2016). Major exhibitions she has participated in include “Fuuin sareta hoshi: Takiguchi Shuzo to Nihon no Āthisuto” [Sealed stars: Takiguchi Shuzo and Japanese artists” (Chukyo University Art Gallery, Aichi, 2005; Gallery Tsubaki, Tokyo, 2006), and her illustration work includes Neko no Shinnosuke [Shinnosuke the cat] by Ito Kazuko (2002).

From Ai no seikatsu [The life of love] (1968) to Sutā tanjō [A star is born] (2018), she has been involved in many of her sister Kanai Mieko’s books as a binding artist and has done book illustrations. The books that showcase the sisters’ close collaboration include Kanai Mieko , Kanai Kumiko no heya [The room of Kanai Mieko and Kumiko (1985), Nomi, circus he yuku [The flea goes to the circus] (2001), Matsu koto, wasureru koto? [Waiting, Forgetting?] (2002), Tanoshimi to hibi [Fun and days” (2007), Tanoshii kurashi no danpen [Fragments of a fun life] (2019), Teidanshu: Kanai shimai no mad party he yōkoso [Trilogy: Welcome to the Kanai Sisters’ mad party] (2021), Shiro ka kuro ka, dochira ni shitemo tora gara deha nai: Tanoshii kurashi no danpen [White or black, either way it’s not a tiger pattern: fragments of a fun life” (2022), etc. In 2018, the sisters’ exhibition “Tōku to kaiga to eizō ni yoru hon no sekai” [The world of books through talk, painting, and video] was held at KIITO, Kobe.
