Sugihara Reina’s Carried (2022) is one of several paintings she worked on simultaneously while taking inspiration from anatomical drawings of the human body and an egg-shaped object. Sugihara’s method of creating multiple paintings simultaneously with these objects at their core allows her to repeatedly suspend, erase, and add to the canvas of each painting. In this way, between uncontrollable emotions and desires and objective self-reflection, she maintains a clinical distance from and rescinds judgement of the subjects of her creative process to finally reach the core, or completion, of the final painting series (=work). Just as a daily diary allows us to follow the stream of the author’s emotions and thoughts over time, Sugihara’s interest in these paintings (=work) created through serial processes is not so much in the final image as in the process of creation, placing importance on how the image was established.
