ODA Kaori

Filmmaker/artist, born 1987 in Osaka. Her work explores human memory (and voice) revolving around the question, “Where did we come from, and where are we headed?” through imagery and sound. Participated in “film. factory,” a program to foster filmmakers led by director Tarr Béla between 2013 and 2016. Her first feature-length work, Aragane (2015), filmed in a Bosnian coal mine, was awarded a Special Mention in the New Asian Currents section at the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival. Cenote, shot in an underwater cave in Mexico, was completed in 2019. The movie has been shown as part of the “Bright Future” competition at the International Festival Rotterdam, and subsequently, at theaters around the world. Oda was rewarded the Oshima (Nagisa) Prize in 2020, and the Art Encouragement Prize for New Artists by the Minister of Education, Science and Culture, in 2021.
